Dave Ramsey said WHAT!?!...

Okay, so we saw Dave Ramsey LIVE and he was a hoot! He had much to say... some old stuff for review, as well as some new thoughts.

Something new we hadn't heard before, but resonated with both Mike and I and our plan for our family as it grows, was this following phrase:

"Act your wage!"

That Dave Ramsey, such a player of words! ;) However, there is much necessity for this phrase as Americans recover from the reality check that the economy ain't always flying high... and money doesn't always come easy! In the last decade or so we've seen some of the youngest generations hit generous levels of wealth... and they came by it pretty easy too! We've seen the "keeping up with the Jones'" trend skyrocket with the average middle class convincing themselves that they too were wealthy... remember when Tiffany's was a big deal and everyone didn't own a piece? Or when it was a big deal to have a Coach purse because everyone you knew didn't already own one... or seven!

The real deal is that, while some people could afford those things (at least while the economy was booming), many of them could not... but so many people were doing so well that many felt that they were entitled to do well too! So they kept spending... and spending... whether they had the money or not! Now, some people did have the money, and perhaps still do, but others are having a hard time adapting to the new economy. They can't get rid of their "Jaguar" (Dave's favorite story) and realize that they've arrived at a new lifestyle. They're spending like they've still got it... and heck, some of em' never had it to begin with!

Dave's point was, we need to force ourselves to be different... steer clear of the popular culture spending trends and avoid hopping on every new bandwagon that giddy-ups through town. If you can't pay cash for it... ya don't buy it folks! Stop trying to keep up with the Jones'... the Jones' are broke! They've got credit card debt up to their eyeballs!

Of all the messages Dave Ramsey left us with last week, this one sticks the most... not just for us, but for our family framework. We want our kids to have boundaries... we want them to value their dollar and learn that they can take their money to Rodeo Drive or they can find the same items, brand new with the tags on them, for pennies on the dollar at Goodwill! If our children have the choice to buy something they don't really need, or give to the church, we want them to make a choice that they can soundly live with... and perhaps, most importantly, we want them to act their WAGE! (or Daddy's wage, until they make their own!)

A Special Thank You...

Addie's Nina Christina was super generous (as always) and decided to make Miss Addison Grace the adorable green tutu seen below! That's right ya'll, she MADE it! Is it not just the perfect amount of glitter and glam!?! Truly ideal for our little "DIVA-DISH", as we like to call her! Oh, and we paired it with the adorable pink leotard, which was also a gift from Nina Christina!

Thanks so much to Christina for her time and effort to make this adorable piece! If there ever comes a day when Addie should outgrow it, we will store it in our keepsake hideaway... a.k.a. Great Grandma Wilkins' cedar chest!

A few favorites that got lost amongst the holidays...

Below are a few pictures and videos I almost forgot to post with the madness of the holidays and such...
These two videos were made for Blake's Nino & Nino/Addie's Tio & Tia since they weren't able to come out for Christmas this year!

The next two pictures are of two special ornaments on our Christmas tree. The pinkish little girl in the front is Addie's ornament and the angel ornament is her cousin Izabelle's ornament. Izabelle was born into the arms of Jesus on November 16, 2008, but is never forgotten in our home. Both Blake & Addison know the ornament well and will tell you that she's Nino & Nina/Tio & Tia's Izabelle Angel.

This next photo is of our silly Addie girl who had pretty bad allergies for a few weeks in December... so much so that we now own a nebulizer and had to have her on 5 treatments a day... come to find out it was due to the beautiful REAL Christmas tree we decided to get this year... needless to say, we switched back to our fake tree the week before Christmas and Miss Addison Grace was back in the game! :)

I just loved this shot of Swamp Thing... I mean Blake! ;)

And here is Diva Addie, striking a pose in her new thrift store wardrobe...
see my previous post about us being "weird" before you send donations for our children's clothes! ;)

This next shot is of Justin Timberlake... I mean Blake! Darnit, I did it again!
And finally, a shot of our silly willies... goosin' around!

We're going to see Dave Ramsey... LIVE!

Anyone who knows us well enough, knows that we're Dave Ramsey fans...
but most of our friends and family don't really know what that means...
Lucky for us, a few of our nearest and dearest have taken the time to find out...
they've gotten past the annoyance of hearing, "You know, Dave Ramsey says..." and have realized that we're not as crazy as we seem! They no longer think that because of a few of our lifestyle choices, we must be washed-up, broke, or on the brink of hitting rock bottom... quite the opposite actually... in the past year, we've been more financially fit than we've ever been! Some would never guess, considering we seem a smidge out-of-the-loop... no television, no cable, old paid-off vehicles, paid-off credit cards, frequent thrift store shopping, etc... guess we can't blame people for thinking we're kinda... well... weird!
The nice thing is... it's great to be "weird" in this way...
because one thing people may not know about Dave Ramsey is his priority to giving... the whole point of saving is not just for ourselves (though it benefits us too), but to save... because saving allows us to give more freely!

And we can honestly say, that our giving to the church and other organizations has increased dramatically since we've entered this "weird" way with money! And you know what, giving feels so much better than spending.

Oh, and if you notice my Dad and Step-Mother acting a little "weird"...
well, it's because they're going to see Dave Ramsey LIVE with Mike and I this Thursday... courtesy of my Dad who bought tickets thinking that Mike and I would like to go... but bought two extra tickets just to "check it out". Whether they're inspired by Dave or not, we're thankful to them! Not just for the tickets, but for taking the time to really see what it's all about!

And for anyone else who wants to see what Dave Ramsey is all about...

Oh, and I wanted to leave with a slightly altered quote by Marjorie Pay Hinckley... because one day our children can look back and understand where our priorities lie...

"I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully tailored clothes, my hair perfectly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids camping. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbor's children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived."

Happy New Year!

We decided to keep New Year's Eve pretty melow! We had a nice family dinner and did a cider toast with the kids, who thought the "fancy juice" was super special! And they love to do "cheers!" After the kids went to sleep we did our tradition of setting goals for the new year and then sharing them with each other. Let's just say we've got a ton of great things happening in 2010... and it hasn't even started yet!

align="center">As for New Year's Day, we decided to load the kids into the van at 4 a.m. and head off to the lake for the kids' first fishing trip! Michael and I used to LOVE fishing from 2003-2006 B.C. (B.C. = Before Children). It was great to introduce the kids to a sport that we both really love and plan to pursue as a family! Despite the fact that we failed to catch anything (other fishermen were blaming it on the full moon, so let's go with that!), we had an awesome time together... definitely a special way to start the year!

Christmas 2009!

We kept this Christmas simplistic, and we're quite grateful for it!

Blake & Addison were great fun this year and seem to be grasping not only the concept of Christmas, but the true meaning of Christmas...

They light up with the sound of the following jingle

(to the tune of Jingle Bells)...

"Nicholas, Nicholas, you know how to live, you see someone with a need and just like Christ you give!"

Thank you Veggie Tales! Regardless of where they learn it, or how they retain the knowledge, it's important to us... Blake also understood that Nicholas didn't have his Mommy or Daddy, and was quite distraught about it. They also learned that Santa works for Jesus, which happens to be the truth! :) And speaking of Jesus, if you had to hear them sing Happy Birthday to Jesus as many times as we did... well, you'd probably ban birthdays for a year... at least!

So, this Christmas and all year through, I'm going to feel blessed that our children loved their toys but also recognized that there is more to the story of Christmas!

Enough of my blabbing... below is a slideshow and some videos for my babies to enjoy when they're older... and for you to enjoy right now if you so wish! ;)

Below are a few seconds from the end of a FANTASTIC children's mass!

Next we have a small clip (at the end of mass) just after the kids visited the adorable nativity in front of the altar. We look kind of creepy because Daddy switched on "night-vision"... so it's like a Halloween Christmas! ;)

Anyhow, the last second of the video is crucial, as you can see my response to watching my son literally ride the cow from the manger... no exaggeration, the cow was about the size of a Great Dane and Blake managed to jump and straddle it .7 seconds...

We definitely see rodeo in his future!

This next clip is of the kids delivering/tossing their homemade birthday cards at the baby Jesus... it was sweet nonetheless!

Next is of Christmas morning... next year we think we'll mount the camera somewhere panormaic so we can catch both kids at once and enjoy the moment WITH both of them! Nonetheless, it was great to see them understanding the event more this year!

Here we have the opening of LEGO Blocks and sharing of candycanes!

Finally, couldn't resist these last two videos of the kids at Grammie & Grandpa Blake's house after opening every parent's worst nightmare... a drum set!

We actually hate to admit it, but the kids love it and so do we!

Cousin Noah prominently leads the band in the last video!

Tree Trimmin'!

Okay, so this is an account of our tree trimming experience... in reverse! Why in reverse you ask? Well, I uploaded the pictures in reverse order and am too lazy to correct it! :)
Nonetheless, trimming the tree is one of my favorite Christmas events! We had a fun time together... hopefully the kids enjoy the evening as much as we do!
Now, without further delay...
you may watch the tree un-trim itself! ;)
